Antique 1700’s Southeast Asia Carved Gilt Wood JAMBUPATI Crowned Buddha Statue
For your consideration is an exquisite antique altar Statue of Buddha
Displays a sitting Crowned Buddha (Jambupati Buddha), in a Bhumisparsha mudra gesture/position (The “Earth-touching” gesture, calling the Earth to witness). Calm and touching expression on His BEAUTIFUL face!
The legend of a Jambupati Buddha recalls the story of the humbling of a proud and arrogant King by the name of Jambupati. The King refused to listen to Buddha, as he did not have a royal outward appearance. Buddha then transformed himself into a mighty king, wearing a prominent crown and immaculate jewelry, setting himself in a majestic palace. Seeing this before his eyes, the King Jambupati believed and accepted the great ability of the Buddha. He submitted himself to the Dharma and became a Buddhist monk.
Dressed in royal attire, decorated breastplate and jewelry throughout the costume
Adorned with an intricate crown
Carved Exotic/Tropical wood with dark-brown lacquer finish and hand applied Gold-leaf overlay
Dovetail construction, seen on the underside
